About the Speaker: Richard Jamieson
Richard Jamieson is the Founder and CEO of Amana DeFi. With over 4.5 years of experience in blockchain development, Richard combines his deep technical expertise in smart contracts, DeFi protocols, and quantitative finance with a passion for building high-impact products that drive financial inclusion.
As the architect behind Amana's platform, Richard is focused on creating a product that prioritises security, scalability, and user-centric design. His leadership is rooted in a commitment to integrity, accountability, and collaboration, fostering a culture of excellence within the company.
Prior to founding Amana DeFi, Richard built a strong foundation in both the DeFi and traditional finance sectors. He played key roles in Atem, a carbon credit platform, and Opty.Fi, a yield aggregation protocol, where he designed and implemented smart contract architectures that interfaced with major DeFi protocols. As the Lead Solidity Developer at Crystl Finance, Richard led the creation of innovative vault mechanisms, growing the platform to over $30M in TVL.
With a background in quantitative finance, entrepreneurship, and leadership consulting, Richard’s diverse skill set has uniquely positioned him to lead Amana DeFi into the next phase of innovation in the DeFi space. His academic background in Electrical Engineering and Philosophy & Mathematics, alongside practical experience in finance and smart contract development, enables him to approach problem-solving from both a technical and strategic perspective.

This seminar is part of a series which has been created to expose UCT MPhil in Fintech students to exceptional individuals in the African Fintech space working on innovative solutions to address the large unbanked population on our continent. Fintech in Africa has received the largest share of funding in recent years, and this trend is expected to increase. As the only dedicated Fintech Master's program on the African continent, one of our goals is to connect our students with leading fintech companies across the continent. In the past, we have had speakers from Nala, Stitch Money, Visa, Spoon Money, Consensys, Authentium, Investec and more. Because seminars have attracted interest from students across campus, any student or individual interested in fintech and related topics are welcome to attend.
